This is a structuring and priority design included within the Strategic Program “Angola Energy 2025”, similarly to other contracts developed in previous years concerning the technical-economic feasibility studies of 25 hydropower schemes in this country.
The hydro power scheme, which takes advantage of 215 m neat head between the reservoir and the outlet works, downstream from the natural falls of Caculo Cabaça, is formed by a concrete dam with 103 m of maximum height and 553 m of crest, allowing the storage of a total volume of about 440 million m3, and also a hydroelectric power plant and an hydraulic circuit. The hydraulic feeding circuit of the turbines is formed by a reservoir water intake, adduction circuit with four tunnels, a cavern power plant and two tailrace tunnels.
After the works conclusion, planned to have an 80 months duration, this infrastructure will have an installed power of 2100 MW and will contribute significantly to the target established by the government for the energy generation capacity until 2025.
The hydro power scheme comprises also a second hydroelectric plant, adjacent to the toe of dam, intended to turbine an environemntal flow of 60 m3/s, and two substations, of 400 kV and 220 kV.
